DUSTY is a beautiful palomino Quarter Horse/Tennessee Walker cross with a lot of personality. He was donated in the spring of 2007. He is a calm horse, which makes him ideal for our program. We are excited to have him as part of our program.
ISAAC whose name means “He makes me laugh” is the youngest member of our therapeutic riding team. Isaac is a nine year old Quarter Horse gelding. He’s a people’s horse who will walk right up to you to share time with you. He’s been trail riding and taken part in the Still Meadows Ride-a-Thon. He is a beautiful chestnut, with a calm personality. Isaac is a great asset to our riding program and loves to be ridden.
JASMINE is a very gentle and friendly chestnut Quarter Horse mare. She is seventeen years old and is very patient with campers (who love to dress her up with hats and more), riders and volunteers. Jasmine fits perfectly into the riding program at Still Meadows.
Therapeutic horseback riding benefits individuals with just about any disability, including, but not limited to: Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy, Amputations, Visual Hearing Impairments, Down Syndrome, CVA/Stroke, Mental Retardation, Multiple Sclerosis, Spina Bifida, Emotional Disabilities, Brain Injuries, Autism, Spinal Cord Injuries and Learning Disabilities
The Horse as “Therapist”:
- The movement of the horse’s gait positively affects balance, muscle control and strength.
- The allure of being able to ride a horse motivates individuals to increase concentration, patience and discipline (as they follow directions of the instructor).
- The unique relationship formed with a horse can help improve interpersonal relationships (kindness, communication, positive interactions).
- The accomplishment of having ridden a horse provides an enormous boost to self-esteem and coping skills.
We are in need of horse care products and special equipment that is beneficial to the riders. We also need calm, sweet horses for the program. All horses have a 30-day trial period and donations are tax-deductible. Please contact us if you wish to make a donation.
