Still Meadows Enrichment Center and Camp

History

In 1997, a group of concerned citizens responded to a vision for a nearby special needs camp to serve children and adults with developmental and/or physical disabilities. Still Meadows Enrichment Center and Camp, the first of its kind in the Shenandoah Valley, is located on 17 acres of rolling hills in Rockingham County with pristine views of Massanutten Mountain and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Still Meadows Enrichment Center and Camp was designed around nature to provide therapeutic activities in a safe and creative country setting. The land was donated to the camp in 2000. Thanks to the Knights of Virginia Assisting the Retarded (KOVAR), we built a spacious picnic shelter and a barn that accommodates horses, sheep, and other small animals.

Except for a paid employee to maintain grounds upkeep during the summer months and another paid personnel to help maintain camp session, we only have one employee to balance and maintain administrative affairs. The rest of the camp is run entirely by members from our coalition of volunteers. Massive amounts of volunteer work have been completed by men from the Harrisonburg Men’s Diversion Center, who have helped clear the land, cut wide trails through the woods, build fencing for our animals, put in an orchard, plant grass around the new construction, repair equipment, and maintain the grounds. Because of limited funds, our camp would not exist without their help.

Still Meadows Enrichment Center and Camp not only provides for the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the participants, but we are also there for their families and caregivers, providing them respite and time to regroup both physically and mentally.
